Chasing Greatness is Magnalis

We have grown up hearing the phrase, “Get a degree, get a job and get married”. Hobbies, interests and passions have to be curbed until the degree certificate gleams proudly in the living room. But here are four youngsters who have had the courage to break free from all conventions. Having come together to pursue their common dream in August 2013, Magnalis is a band formed by students of Christ University and is named after the Latin word (magnale/magnalis) which means ‘Greatness’.

The band performs progressive rock, an unusual genre that gives scope for improvising music. It can start with a symphony ballad and move on to heavy distortions. “The band Porcupine Tree has been a pioneer in this trait and we have been inspired by them,” Deepak, whose brainchild is Magnalis, told edex. Besides him, the band has Subin Benedict Stellus, the lead guitarist who is in his third-year BCom, Nikhil Abraham, the drummer, and Rishi Arohra, the base guitarist. The boys also draw huge inspiration from Metallica, The Clash, Iron Maiden, as well as performers like John Mayer.

Proud about the achievements of the band, “which has a unique touch to it: ‘the Magnalis touch’. That’s what makes it special,” opines Shilpa Johar, the band manager. “Magnalis is a band opulent of good vibes. The energy in every single person is inspiring and motivating,” says Rishi Arohra, a first-year BCom student.

The band is MTV acclaimed and has taken part in their ‘Never Hide Sound’ contest. Magnalis’ forthcoming compositions include Final Redemption, Tick Tock Love Song and Memories.
