In yet another instance of increasing interest among Indian students in overseas education, the US Consulate has seen a 40 per cent increase in the number of students applying for the student visa last year. India now sends the second largest number of foreign students. Speaking at the inauguration of the US Universities Fair in the city recently, Consul General Phillip Min said that at present there were over one lakh Indian students studying in the US universities. He said that out of the total number of students who were studying abroad, more than half were into the STEM subjects — Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
Guv begins process to fill four vc posts
Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala, who is also the Chancellor of universities, has initiated the process of appointing Vice-Chancellors to four universities — Gulbarga University, Krishnadevaraya University, Kuvempa University and Rani Chennamma University. He has advised the Higher Education Department to write to the University Grants Commission (UGC) to nominate its members to the search committees for recommendations to these posts.
College elections in limbo in kerala
University of Kerala’s failed bid to implement the parliamentary or indirect method of election to college and university student unions, as opposed to the presidential system being followed now, has once again put the spotlight on the pros and cons of both forms of campus election. Due to fierce opposition from student outfits, the University of Kerala has shelved the elections for the time being.
