‘Indian Banking — Journey into the Future’ lecture series held at IMIS Bhubaneswar

The sixth Banking Lecture Series 2014 with the theme ‘Indian Banking — Journey into the Future’ was inaugurated by Krishna Mohan Trivedi, CGM, State Bank of India, in the Swagat Vihar Campus of Institute of Management and Information Science (IMIS), Bhubaneswar, on September 19. In the inaugural ceremony, Prof HK Patnaik, Director General of IMIS and Prof KK Beuria, the Advisor of IMIS, delivered the welcome address and Prof Usha Kamilla, Director of the institute, introduced the guests. The banking lecture series is ongoing and state heads of various public and private sector banks will address the students on issues pertaining to Indian banking industry. Management students of IMIS Bhubaneswar were present for various lecture sessions and found it helpful. Intellectuals from industry and academia were also present in this inaugural session. Prof Divya Gupta, Coordinator, rendered the vote of thanks.

Chettinad Academy launches NSS

The National Service Scheme (NSS) at Chettinad Academy of Research and Education (CARE), Chennai, was officially launched on September 24 at the Chettinad Health City campus in the city. The Vice-Chancellor of CARE, Dr V Raji, inaugurated the function along with NSS day celebration. She delivered the inauguration address. Dr K Ravindran, Dean, Chettinad Hospital and Research Institute (CHRI) and Dr R Ganesan, Medical Superintendent, CHRI, were present and also addressed the gathering. Saplings were planted to commemorate the inauguration in the CHRI campus by the 200 NSS volunteers extending their responsibilities towards a green environment.

Campus drive at RMK Group of Institutions

Students of RMK Group of Institutions’ RMK Engineering College, RMD Engineering College and RMK College of Engineering and Technology, (all based in Tiruvallur, Tamil Nadu), have got over 1,900 employment offers in this year’s campus drive. IT firms like Cognizant, Infosys, and WIPRO came out with offers in on-spot campus interviews. Over 1,2oo candidates out of the 1,700 that registered for placement got offers. Students from all the streams including BE - CSE, IT, ECE, EEE, EIE, Mechanical, Civil, BTech-IT, and ME-CSE, VLSI, Applied Electronics, Power Electronics and Product Design have registered for the interview. While Cognizant gave away 855 offers, Infosys offered 634 letters and WIPRO provided over 400 offer letters for various positions in IT and product lifecycle management domains. The offers promised a pay of `3.25-`3.50 lakh per annum.

TISS establishes School of Vocational Education

Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai, announced the launch of School of Vocational Education (SVE) recently. The approach adopted by (TISS-SVE) is called the Work Integrated Training Programme (WITP). This vocational educational programme will focus on job specific skills rather than providing only a broad-based education. The courses will be conducted pan India through hub partners (supporting effective delivery of classroom-based inputs) and skill knowledge partners (an industry partner who will provide on the job training). This project has been initiated under the aegis of All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) proposed by Ministry of HRD, Government of India. The Bachelor of Vocational Education (BVoc) will target youth who are seeking non-formal education methods to enhance their  employability and earning capabilities. The short-term skill enhancement courses will go on for less than six months under the following sectors: Automotive; Travel and Tourism; Retail; Pharmaceuticals; Media and Entertainment; Construction; HR and Sales; Healthcare; Industrial Safety; Industrial Tool Manufacturing; Dialysis Technology; Printing Technology; Logistics; Information Technology Enabled Services (ITeS) and Banking, Financial services and Institutions (BFSI).

BSAU signs MoU with Sparx

BS Abdur Rahman University (BSAU), Chennai, joins Sparx Systems, Australia as RandD partner. The Sparx ‘Enterprise Architect’ software is a Business Analysis and IT Architecture software used by over three lakh users globally, across industry verticals including Banking, Insurance, Manufacture, IT, Aeronautics and semiconductors. The MoU signed between Sparx and BSAU facilitates a partnership for training students on the use of the software as well as making BSAU as its hub for development and application of products using this Sparx Enterprise Architect. Vice-Chancellor Prof JAK Tareen and Coordinator of project Prof Sheik Abdul Khader were present along with other college representatives. The Sparx Systems India’s , CEO Nizam Mohammed and vice-president Mohamed Bakkrudeen were also present.

SRM Univ’s Srujan a huge hit

SRUJAN’14 was conducted recently in SRM University, Ramapuram Campus, Chennai. The one-day meet had overwhelming response with over 200 participants from different colleges. During the workshop, four different technical competitions were conducted — Potential Professor, paper presentations, poster presentations and a CADD Contest Workshop on Pre-stressed-Post tensioning design including executions and case studies. N Dharmarajan, Vice-President, L&T HR-ECC was the Chief Guest. M Sekar, Director, SRM University was the Special Guest. Subbiah Bharathi, Dean and Antony Micheal Raj, Vice-Principal, SRM University, presided over the function. The inaugural function started with the welcome address by T Ch Madhavi, Convenor and Head, Department of Civil Engineering and M Sekar. Prizes and cash awards worth `20,000 was distributed for event winners of the contest.

Foreign university graduates have better technical skills, says survey

The British Council, Chennai, launched the India Employability Survey 2014. The report probes the quality of talent pools expected by Indian industry in the next three-five years and assesses current employability of workforces emerging from foreign, and specifically, UK universities. The British Council commissioned business research firm IMA India to conduct the survey. The research surveyed 200 foreign and Indian companies on ascertaining the attractiveness of Indian and foreign university graduates for employers on various parameters such as skill set, availability and quality of talent pool and other parameters. The research captures the hiring trends, defining factors for recruitment of foreign-university graduates, preferred destinations, qualifications and disciplines of study. It was found that 51 per cent of companies hire only from the top 20 Indian institutions, and less than a quarter of these firms hire only from the top 10 in any discipline. From among those who hire foreign graduates, over 60 per cent of companies hire only from the global top 50 universities, of which close to a third hire only from the world’s 10 best institutions. Around 39 per cent graduates from foreign universities are deemed better prepared than those from Indian universities and require less training.

Graduation ceremony at Madha Engg College

The 12th graduation ceremony of Madha Engineering College, Kunrathur, Tamil Nadu, was held on September 27. A Prakash, Director of the College welcomed the Chief Guest, V Dhanapalan, Justice, Madras High Court, Chennai. A Baradeeswaran, Principal, presented the annual report. V Dhanapalan gave away the certificates and medals to the university rank holders and meritorious graduands. S Peter, Founder and President of Madha Group of Academic Institutions presided over the ceremony. S Madankumar, Director of Madha Medical College and Hospital and J Ragav, Director of Madha Dental College and Hospital, were special guests on this occasion. Over 500 students took part in this event and received their certificate and medals.
