NIIT launches certificate course on insurance

NIIT Institute of Finance, Banking and Insurance Training, Ahmedabad, recently launched a six-month certificate programme in Insurance, an exclusive career programme designed for SBI General Insurance, a joint venture between State Bank of India and Insurance Australia Group. It is the institute’s first-ever earn and learn programme where each student will get an opportunity to work under experienced mentors and understand the business dynamics. Skilled professionals, graduates and students who have successfully completed Class XII in the regular mode and, are in the 21-40 years age group can apply for this programme. Candidates will be absorbed by SBI General Insurance after successful completion of the certificate. The students will be assigned to a branch and an experienced mentor from SBI General will provide the required on-the-job training. Ravi Khanna, Vice President-HR and Learning at SBI General Insurance Company, addressed the gathering and Bimal Jain, President, NIIT IFBI, was present during the launch.

Dr Verghese Kurien Memorial Oration on Sustainable Development held at XLRI

XLRI Jamshedpur, one of India’s premier B-Schools organised the Dr Verghese Kurien Memorial Oration on Sustainable Development. The oration is dedicated to the Founder of AMUL Verghese Kurien, popularly known as ‘the Milkman of India’. Nirmala Kurien, the daughter of Verghese Kurien was present as the guest of honour. The oration was delivered by  P Sainath, Eminent Journalist and Ramon Magsaysay Awardee for Journalism, Literature and Creative Communication Arts. Prof Madhukar Shukla, Chairperson of XLRI’s Fr Arrupe Center for Ecology and Sustainability and Convener of the oration was also present. E Abraham SJ, Director of XLRI, was also present at the event.

Third-edition of Deloitte Maverick programme launched

National Conference held on materials for modern world at Easwari Engineering College

Department of Physics, Easwari Engineering College, Chennai, has organised The Department of Atomic Energy-Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences sponsored a two-day National Conference on Materials for Modern World (NCMMW 2014) held on September 10 and 11. The Chief Guest for the inaugural function of the conference was U Kamachi Mudali, Outstanding Scientist and Associate Director, Corrosion Science and Technology Group, and Head, Reprocessing Research and Development Division and IGCAR-Patents and Technology Transfer Cell, IGCAR, Kalpakkam. S Nirmala, Head of Physics Department and convenor, welcomed the gathering. Kamachi Mudali delivered the inaugural address. Principal M Sekar delivered the presidential address. There were seven seminar sessions with experts from IGCAR Kalpakkam, C-MET Hyderabad, IIT Madras, Anna University Chennai, and University of Madras among others.

Prof Biswajeet Pattanayak to head AIMA Council of Management

Prof Biswajeet Pattanayak, an eminent educationist and Management Guru, Founder and Director of Asian School of Business Management, Bhubaneswar has been elected to the Council of Management of All India Management Association (AIMA), New Delhi, for the term of 2014–2016. He will represent the Members in ‘Fellow’ grade in the Council. Prof Pattanayak is a former Professor of IIM Indore and Lucknow. He is a well-known professor in the area of Human Resource Management and Organisational Behaviour. He is a recipient of many awards and accolades including the recent recognition of being appointed by the President of India as a member to the First Court of Central University of Rajasthan and to the Court of Guru Ghasidas Central University, Chhatisgarh.

Infosys recruits students of KCG College of Technology at campus placements

Infosys visited the KCG College of Technology, a unit of Hindustan Group of Institutions, Chennai campus on September 1 and 2 and conducted aptitude tests and a round of interviews to recruit the deserving students of the final-year students. A total of 158 students (91 from KCG College of Technology and 67 from Hindustan University) were selected. “Many other top companies are to visit the campus in the days to come and I hope that eligible candidates will be placed in the days to come,” conveyed Ganesh, Head-Placement, KCG College.

DesiDime.com organises course on marketing

DesiDime.com, an online shopping community to get deals, coupons and shopping advice, has partnered with Hellointern.com to launch its Campus-2-Corporate Initiative. The programme helps a student learn about the various areas of digital marketing and also takes their learning to a live CSR project called ‘Every action counts’. The programme is specially designed by Desidime’s marketing team, for students to enhance their marketing and leadership skills, keeping in mind their needs and current marketing trends. Mehul Jobanputra, CEO and Co-Founder of DesiDime.com and Madhu Avalur, the Chief Mentor of Hellointern.com, was present at the launch. The teachings would be imparted through the means of fortnightly webinars and Google Discussion forums. The last date to apply for this programme is September 22.

BMS College organises National Level Tech Symposium — PhaseShift 2014

PhaseShift 2014 National Level Tech Symposium was held at BMS College of Engineering, Bangalore. Chief Guest MC Dinesh, Vice-President of the Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry, inaugurated the event. The Guest of Honour was Akhiller Rohman, the Head of ABB Corporate Research Center, Bangalore. The student-led projects were showcased promoted the innovation made by creating several useful gadgets. Panel Discussions on the topic ‘Employability of Engineering Graduates: Issues, Challenges, Knowledge Integration, and Remedial Measures to Bridge the gap’ was well appreciated. Also, Charan, Senior Application Engineer in Nihon Koso company, and an alumnus of the institute gave a lecture on ‘Control Valves in Oil and Gas Industries and Power Plants’. Students enrolled and participated in games like Logo-Mania, Pictionary, Hephaesthus and Electronic Genius. K Mallikarjuna Babu, the Principal of BMSCE was also present during the inauguration.

Three TN colleges move into Phase II of Shell Eco Marathon ’15

Three Engineering colleges from Tamil Nadu — VIT University, Vellore, Madras Institute of Technology, Chennai, and SRM University, Chennai, have cleared Phase I of registrations for Shell Eco-Marathon Asia 2015. Shell Eco-Marathon challenges high school and university students from around Asia to design, build and test energy efficient vehicles. From a number of participants at SEM Asia, the winning team will to cover the maximum distance using the least amount of energy. The grand finale of the competition will be held in Manila in Philippines from February 26 to March 1, 2015. In the final, teams will cover 10 laps, each 1.2 kms long. The teams will field Prototype and Urban Concept vehicles, powered by gasoline, diesel, electric battery and compressed natural gas (CNG).

SRU conducts conference on Neurodegenerative disorders

Neurologist Dr Krishnamurthy Srinivas, Emeritus Chairman, Institute of Neurological Society, Chennai, inaugurated the national conference of the Society for Neurochemistry, India (SNCI), at Sri Ramahandra University (SRU), Chennai, on September 20. The three-day conference discussed ‘Neurodegenerative disorders and metabolic diseases’. He said that close family ties, living together and interaction can delay the onset of dementia or Alzheimer’s in elders. Shail K Sharma, President of the society and Professor, AIIMS, Prof Prakash Babu, General Secretary, SNCI, KV Somasundaram, Dean of Faculties, Chairman, Cardiac Care Centre, S Thanikachalam, BV David, C Saravana Babu of the Centre for Toxicology and Developmental Research, SRU, and D Chamundeswari, Principal, Faculty of Pharmacy, SRU, were also present.
