NEW DELHI: IIT Kanpur, organising institute for GATE-2015, has decided to extend the last date for submission of application for the examination by two weeks after flood affected students of Jammu and Kashmir made an appeal to the HRD Minister in this regard.

The earlier deadline for submission of applications with supporting documents and bank challan was September 30.

Candidates can now submit the application online till October 14, a government statement today said.

A large number of applicants and candidates for GATE 2015 from Jammu and Kashmir and adjoining areas had made appeals to Smriti Irani to extend the deadline apprehending that they won't be able to submit certificates from the college principal and application fees through banks.

The Minister had asked the IIT Kanpur to "positively" consider requests made by applicants.

The GATE score is used for admissions to post-graduate programs such as M.E., M.Tech and direct Ph.D in Indian institutes of higher education with financial assistance provided by HRD Ministry and other government agencies.

The scores are also used by public and private sector undertakings for employment screening purposes.
