Empowering the Poor Through Education

Suthan dreams of providing quality education to uplift the economically deprived

Suthan D, a third- year Engineering student at Maharaja Institute of Technology (MIT), Mysore, is a volunteer at ‘Chayadevi Orphanage Centre’ and ‘Ajitha Nele’, a home for girls. Fond of teaching right from his childhood days, Suthan says, “I used to teach my classmates during my school days”.

With the will to help underprivileged children, he discussed the idea with his close friends, Amoghavarsha and Sanjana Poovaiah. They advised him to go to an orphanage and teach children who don’t get access to proper education.

“Dont give them fish. Instead teach them how to fish” was one of the famous quotable quotes that inspired Suthan. He started visiting orphanages during his free time to “teach and spread knowledge”.

Along with his friends, he formed an NGO named Dews of Hope. Apart from social work and studies, he takes tuition for high school students and has also worked as an  assistant teacher in a local school, Chaitra High School, Mysore.

He is a part-time theatre artist and has performed in six national-level plays in Delhi and Mumbai, more than 40 plays since his childhood days and has short films to his credit too. In his free time, he enjoys playing cricket and has represented the Mysore division.

He aims to become a professor and build his own institution, one which would provide free education to poor students and change the education system. He concludes, “My ultimate aim is to help the poor children and bring a change in the education system that prioritises marks over practical knowledge.”
