Why India Needs MoreTeachers

In India, the sad state of affairs is that teaching has almost been relegated to the most backward category in the list of preferred professions by the youth.

We cannot categorically blame young citizens.  It is the government and the private educational institutes that have created an environment of deficit with respect to this most noble of professions in the world.

Our country has a rich learning tradition but the irony today is we are witnessing a situation where young people are very reluctant and hesitant when it comes to taking up the profession.  Studies conducted over the last five years in metros and major tier-two and tier-three cities are clearly indicating a very tragic state where engineering, IT, banking and financial services, media and entertainment are the desired choices when it comes to professions.

Teaching is not even remotely seen amongst one of the desired professions and is  nowhere reflecting among students’ choices in urban, semi-urban and rural areas.

There is a huge deficit of quality teachers in this country. A recent report published by the UNESCO states,“Teaching is seen as a second-class job for those who don’t do well enough academically to enter more prestigious careers, such as medicine or engineering.” Offering better salaries could get people interested in India.

India needs promising teachers who can inspire young minds .

We have such a vibrant and huge youth population who can render such yeoman service to the Education industry by aspiring to become teachers in their respective areas of educational interest.
