Last year’s DC release Justice League introduced Aquaman alongside Flash and Cyborg as part of an all-star ensemble. As part of the Aquaman story that was explored in the film, a principal character Mera, played by Amber Heard, was introduced.

A full-length feature about the origins of this character is scheduled for release later this year, and the latest we hear is that the origin story of Mera and Nereus (played by Dolph Lundgren) will be starkly different from the comics. Nereus is the king of Xebel, a country where Mera resides, and the latter is betrothed to the king. But according to sources, the film version will have Nereus and Mera sharing a father-daughter bond.

Director James Wan had earlier said that unlike the comics, Nereus will not be a full-fledged villain, given that Black Manta and Ocean Master will be the primary villains. Dolph Lundgren was also quoted saying, “Basically, I try to keep the peace down there along with Amber Heard who plays my daughter. We are trying to avoid war between the surface and Atlantis.” Aquaman will be released worldwide on December 21.
