'Batman is a superhero I love'

Joseph Gordon-Levitt, the multi-tasking actor-director, talks about his character in the time-travel story, 'Looper'.
'Batman is a superhero I love'

Joseph Gordon-Levitt has come a long way from the television sitcom, '3rd Rock from the Sun', and we are mighty glad. Whether you are a fan of his '500 Days of Summer', 'Inception', '50/50' or 'The Dark Knight Rises', you must admit that he delivers the goods. Known for his comic timing and action, the part-time director — his directorial debut, the 24 minute-long 'Sparks', was selected for the 2009 Sundance Film Festival — has been coming in for a lot of praise for his sci-fi film, Looper. In the time-travel story, his character is a hired killer sent to assassinate a future version of himself. Starring Bruce Willis and Emily Blunt, it is being released here today and this is what Gordon-Levitt had to tell us.

What attracted you to 'Looper'?

'Looper' is kind of a redemption story in a way...It’s not one of those time travel movies that’s really about the time travel. It uses time travel as a springboard to ask a much more basic question, which is, what would you say to your future self if you could meet them.

'Don Jon’s Addiction', your full feature directorial debut is scheduled for next year. Tell us more.

I’m very excited. We finished shooting it two months ago and we’re in the process of editing it.I wrote Scarlett Johansson a really fun part. She liked the script so much that she did it, which is an honor... Julianne Moore is also in the movie. Tony Danza plays my dad. It’s definitely the hardest thing I’ve ever done.

The role closest to your heart?

If I had to choose one, it would be of Brendan from 'Brick'. During that film, I met my best friend in the world, Rian Johnson.

What do you do when you are not making movies?

I’m concentrating right now on hitRECord, an open collaborative production company.

Do you still have a Batman hangover?

Batman is a superhero I love. I can never get over it.

Who do you know in the Bollywood industry?

I think one Indian that Hollywood knows by now is Freida Pinto. She is very beautiful.
