Out of the 72 Telugu serials that are aired on television, 60 are dubbed in Telugu and only 12 are originally made in Telugu. This situation has led to unemployment of 3600 members from the Telugu television industry, which has inturn led to five technicians resorting to commit suicide.

To rectify this situation, Telugu television artistes and technicians have protested against dubbed Telugu serials and demanded that only original Telugu serials should be aired. The Joint Action Committee organised a meeting on the same on Thursday, where the venue was packed with people from the Telugu television industry, who passionately expressed their disapproval for serials being dubbed in Telugu. Veteran director Dasari Narayana Rao, who was present at the meeting, said, “Because of serials in other languages being dubbed in Telugu, our language is getting ruined. Other languages don’t encourage Telugu, then why are we encouraging them? We have the talent to make better serials. We should not be borrowing them from other languages.” The protesters are of the belief that these dubbed serials are also creating a negative impact on Telugu culture, since every language and community has a unique culture. Mandali Buddha Prasad, Chairman of Andhra Pradesh State Official Language Commission, said, “Dubbed serials are spoiling our Telugu culture and traditions. It is shameful that we are encouraging something like this. It will also have a negative impact on the next generation.” He further said that technicians are facing a lot of problems because channel owners are trying to save money by airing dubbed serials. While an original serial will need a host of actors, technicians and many others to get involved, a serial which can be dubbed into Telugu is leavinf actors and technicians out of job.

Channel owners are being blamed for this and have been given time till Ugadi to stop the airing of dubbed serials.
