It’s official. Rajkumar Hirani confirms, “One draft of the script of the Sanjay Dutt biopic is done. And we have signed Ranbir Kapoor for it.” Now that his co-production Saala Khadoos is ready for release,  Hirani is going to channelise his energies into this project. We shoot some quick questions to the filmmaker with the Midas touch.

What drew you to the Sanjay Dutt biopic?

For me, the only reason to make a biopic is when I hear an engaging story. And I got engaged in his story.

Did Sanjay Dutt give the nod instantly?

Last time when he was here, I narrated him the whole script … he is aware about what is happening. For 25 days, I sat with him just to hear his story. I was editing PK then and I would call Sanjay and tell him, ‘Sanju, shaam ko aa raha hoon.’ He would narrate his story and I would patiently hear it out.

Is he co-producing the film with you?

All these logistics are yet to be finalised. Will the biopic have more than one heroine? We are still working on the script …there will be changes.

You have been working on the third part of Munnabhai for quite some time now. The Munabhai Chale America teaser was released long back. What’s the hold up?

It was a good teaser but we couldn’t crack it so we dropped that idea. Munnabhai Chale America isn’t happening since we couldn’t

further the script; we have scrapped it. We are now working on a new script for the third part. Abhijat (Joshi) and I have a few ideas. We have discussed them and hopefully we shall be ready soon. For now, we are working on the Sanjay Dutt biopic. But the third part of Munnabhai will certainly happen.

Has Sanjay been signed for Munna Bhai third part?

We don’t have to sign him. We did not sign him for Munna Bhai or Lage Raho Munna Bhai... we have a contract.
