City's Underbelly

Sreenivasan has always addressed the basic concerns of common man through his socio-political satires. Chinthavishtayaya Shyamala released in 1998 that bagged the National Award was one such outing that humorously narrated the life of an irresponsible husband and his wife. Sreenivasan-Sangita pair, who were well noticed for their performance in the film, is back through Nagaravaridhi Naduvil Njan. The seasoned scenarist himself has penned the screenplay and dialogues of the film, the shooting of which began recently in Thrissur. Debutant Shibu Balan is the director of the film.

Nagaravaridhi Naduvil Njan is a film that brings forth a slew of issues that disrupt the life of an ordinary citizen. The director who has been an associate of Sathyan Anthikad says, the film is a social satire that is narrated with a tinge of humour. Speaking more about the film that falls to the genre of movies like Sandesham’, the director says, “A middle class family that lives in a city has to confront several unexpected hurdles. Waste management is one such major headache. Along with it, the film also discusses relevant topics like the inability of government to rehabilitate the gulf returnees and the pitiable state of financially backward students in self-financing colleges.”

Delving into the storyline, Shibu says, “Venu and Sunitha are a middle class couple who live in a small flat in Thrissur. Venu has returned from gulf having lost his job. He has a five cent property which he plans to sell so as to pay the capitation fee for his daughter’s higher studies. To his dismay, Venu finds heaps of waste piled in his property which makes it difficult for him to sell the land. He cannot pay the fee on date, and things become more complicated.” The director who has been living in a high-rise for several years says his experience has also inspired the storyline.

Shibu says the story has been there in his mind for a while. “After creating a rough outline, I approached Sreenivasan who wrote the screenplay. It was he who suggested Sangita as the heroine,” says Shibu. The director says the actress who was away from limelight for a long time was initially reluctant to make a comeback. But she eventually agreed.

The director considers his film as a far cry from the usual run-of-the-mill outings. “This is no candyfloss movie, and neither are there villains or stunts. The film is the narration of a natural incident that happens in everyone’s life,” he says. Innocent, Lal, Manoj K Jayan and Bheeman Raghu are the other actors.

While Pappu wields the camera, Govind Menon from Thaikkudam Bridge band scores the background music for the movie. The movie has no songs.

Nagaravaridhi Naduvil Njan produced by E 4 Entertainment is expected for a November release.
