The King of Parody V D Rajappan is No More

Rjappan was keeping away from mainstream for nearly a decade owing to diabetes and other ailments.

KOTTAYAM: Noted ‘Kathaprasangam’ artist and cine actor V D Rajappan passed away at the age of 66 here on Thursday.

Rajappan who had been hospitalised for the past few days at a private hospital here breathed his last in the afternoon.

Hailing from Peroor in the district, Rajappan, who has acted in nearly 100 movies, mainly in comic role, was famous for his parody songs. His unique stand-up comedies in which vehicles and animals were main characters were a hit in the period during late 70's to early 90's. He had a style of his own which the audience also enjoyed well. It was the main theme of his ‘Kathaprasangams’, the love and revenge of his characters like frog, cock, buffalo, snake, dog or vehicles like lorry and bus, that really grabbed the audience’s attention. The accompanied parodies of popular bollywood and mollywood film songs made him a much sought after ‘Kathaprasangam’ artist. Thousands of stages, including that in the Gulf, hosted his programmes at the peak of his career. The audio cassettes of his programmes were also sold like hot cakes.

'Prye Ninte Kura', 'Kumari Eruma', 'Mak mak', 'Ennennum Kurangetante', ‘Chikayunna Sundari’ and ‘Avalude Parts’ were some of his kathaprasangams that went places.

His performance in movies like ‘Mutharam Kunnu P O’,‘Kakka’, ‘Engane Nee Marakkum’, Attakkalasham and Kusruthikattu also brought laughter among the viewers.

Rjappan was keeping away from mainstream for nearly a decade owing to diabetes and other ailments. He had also suffered a stroke recently.

He is survived by wife Sulochana and sons Rajesh and Rajeev.
