Exceeding expectations

Set in a rural milieu, Vikadakavi centers around the deep bonding between five classmates from school. This group of three boys and two girls grow up to become even closer, and stand by each other through thick and thin.

Helmed by debutant director Krishna, the film is a small budget one and has a cast of freshers. The only familiar face is Amala Paul, who was to initially make her debut with this film, had it released on time. But incidentally, her Veerasamar released first. So now, when her career is on a high post-Myna, her presence in this film might come as a perk for the makers of Vikadakavi.

The strength of the script lies in the unusual etching of the lead characters and the fun moments generated out of it. Incidentally, the title is derived from the their names — Vinod, Kavita, Diana, Karuna and Virumandi. The five friends, all of whom are born in the Tamil month of Aadi, share the same birthday. Superstition has it that those born in this month turn out to be brats, and their antics only strengthen this belief.

Vinod and Kavita’s friendship matures into love as they step into adolescence. But hailing from different economic strata, they face a number of hurdles. As for the other three, their quirks constantly disturb family and neighbours.

For instance, Diana’s absentmindedness is portrayed in a humourous way; Karuna, who walks and talks slowly, takes hours to reach a place that’s a stone’s throw away, and Virumandi, with his booming voice stretched to its highest decibel, scares the daylight out of people.

The cast fits in suitably and humour flows in abundance throughout the film, keeping you in splits. The director’s effort to infuse freshness and novelty in this film is applaudable. Vikadakavi has no big names to boast of, but certainly exceeds the expectations from a debutant.
