'Aandava Perumal' (Tamil)

His two earlier films (‘Vijaynagaram’. ‘Kottie’) have not been career boosters for him. And now actor Shivan returns with his third venture ‘Aandava Perumal’, his home production. The film fairly neatly crafted by Priyan (apprenticed with editor Lenin), has a smooth narrative flow. But lacking punch and fritz,it however offers nothing novel or exciting for the audience. What it does is showcase Shivan in a favourable light. As Sarathy he is intense, performs his role with understanding, and his action sequences with aplomb. New find Ankitha is just about adequate.

Shivan plays Sarathy whiling away his life, until he falls for the comely Anita (Ankitha). He woos her relentlessly and professes his love to her. But realising that his was a one-sided love, and that she was betrothed to another, he backs out.

The director here has made an effort not to go the predictable way.

Moving on, Sarathy decides to make something of his life.  But a problem arises and Anita re-enters his life on her wedding eve. With some goons on a vendetta-mode against the duo, and with her possessive fiance around, its about how Sarathy handles the situation.  The second half is a tad dragging. Sarathy’s ‘pathos’ song in the wine-bar makes it no better. The director brings in a twist at the end. It’s a biblical, saviour- style offending for Sarathy.

The Verdict: A film you wouldn't mind watching once
