The director has not attempted to make the happenings exciting or interesting. He has managed to keep his narration steady at an even pace.

Director S.S.Kumaran

After Theneer Viduthi, music composer-director Kumaran returns with his second directorial venture Kerala Nattilam Pengaludane. He depicts the dilemma and travails of a youngster caught between his father’s desire and his mother’s aspiration, while seeking the most suitable bride.

Krishnan’s dad insists that his son marries a Malayalee to overcome the failure of his own love story in his youth.

In order to make his son follow his advice, he teaches him the Keralite customs and traditions from a very young age. He also makes him promise that he will fulfill his desire. However, his mother is equally determined about getting him married to a Tamilian.

In search of his bride, Krishnan (Abhi) encounters three women —  his mother’s choice Meenkodi, a spirited cop, and two girls Manju and Nisha in Kerala.

Manju is a sprightly journalist and Nisha is mistaken by Krishnan’s father to  be his girlfriend.

Krishnan gets kidnapped twice by goons from both sides of the border. The story is narrated in  flashbacks, when he tells his story in parts to both the gangs.

A third gang of Andhra rowdies too is out to kidnap him. There is a slight twist at the end, where pieces of the puzzle fall in place.

Within the confines of the role, debutant Abhi has given a fair performance. The three female leads fit in adequately in their respective roles. Kali as Krishnan’s friend in Kerala brings in some fun moments.

However, the director doesn’t go deep into any exploration of cultural and custom differences. But till the end, it is not clear what exactly he intends to convey.

With a bunch of new faces who don the lead roles, the director has attempted a light-hearted entertainer. But, at its best it’s just mildly amusing.

Kerala Nattilam... at most times makes it seem like a TV serial.
