Grappling with a Genre Riddle

A dull screenplay, lacklustre narration and uninspiring leads ensure that one gets totally alienated from this film. The director cannot make up his mind on whether it is an action thriller or a comedy.

Murugaatrupadai is about Murugan, an engineering student from an affluent family. His father running a reputed construction firm plans to set up a residential complex. But he faces intimidation when he refuses to pay the local thug a cut from his business. How this affects their lives and how Murugan takes on the tormentor is the story. The latter part turns into a total farce after Murugan and friends kidnap the thug’s confidante (Kanna) and holds him hostage. The director pays a tribute to the late actor Raghuvaran. Raghuvaran is Antony the kingpin. Apart from a song in his honour, the actor’s photos, posters and shots from an earlier film have been used. Apart from this novelty, there is nothing much going for the film.
