Gnabagangal, the film where lyricist Pa Vijay turns hero has drawn praise from his peers in the film  industry. The film stars Pa Vijay and Sridevika, and is based on real life memories. “This film is  very important to me personally,” says Vijay. “I dedicate it to Kadiravan and Meera on whose love it  is based. Through the film I want to show that love is not confined to kings and princes. Even  the love stories of ordinary people are  equal if not greater in measure to that of legendary  lovers.”

According to the trailor, the film is a homage to a poet, Kadiravan, who was a roommate of Vijay  when he was a struggler in Chennai in 1993. A thorough socialist, Kadir breathed Lenin and Marx. But  one day, love hit him slowly but hard when he met  Meera. She was the  daughter of the North Indian  landlord staying below. But Kadir was arrested one day and by the time he returned she was married  off to someone in her community. A shattered Kadir lost interest in writing, took to drinks and  returned to his village. Four months later he died. “I found his diary which had a dream and a last  wish for his lady love. My film is the tale of the 1 ½ years I spent with Kadir. Only the songs are  fictional, but the rest is true,” says Vijay. Directed by Jeevan, the highlight is a 3-day shoot at  the Taj Mahal.
