Although controversies have always followed Simbu throughout his film career, he seems unfazed. During our chat, he talks about the much-awaited Achcham Yenbadhu Madamaiyada (AYM), which is releasing this Friday and why he believes in destiny

What can you tell us about AYM?
The expectations from the film is high after Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa (VTV, 2010), and I could see it all over. VTV is one of the most cherished films of my career. In AYM while the first half is a breezy love story, the second half is high on action sequences like Kaakha Kaakha (2003) and Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu (2006). Honestly, I think AYM will be ten times better than VTV.

Do you think you have evolved as an actor?
No other profession gives you scope to express yourself. I act without the fear of being judged. I don’t consider myself as a performer, and I don’t think I am a great actor. All I want to do is just entertain. But whatever directors tell me, I do it in a realistic way. To me, originality matters. Whenever directors narrate something to me, I listen to it, and internalise. I enact it like that really happened to me.

How was it like to team up with Gautham Menon again?
Working with him is a treat for everyone, and it was no different for me. He churns out the best from any actor, and that’s why he’s one of the best directors around. Gautham gave me absolute freedom to work. He’s an earnest filmmaker and a taskmaster. When he is on the sets, there is nothing else on his mind.

What do you look for before signing a film?
I am passionate about cinema. No actor chooses a film believing that it will be a disaster. I do films, which people can connect to, through the essence of the character. I accept offers when I think I can do justice to it. I search for what I can get out of a particular role. I try to perform them in different ways. Ultimately, an actor’s perspective matters.

Why have you always been controversy’s favourite child?
I have always spoken my mind and don’t like to mince words. People are eager to know  about my personal life. I am happy about it. They don’t even think about the bigger stars, but, think about me 24x7.  They are curious to know where I am going, what I am doing, etc. No, I am not being sarcastic. (Smiles) On the other hand, controversies help me get positive attention towards my movies. With every film, it’s only increasing.

Do you have a dream script?
No. Every film that I put my heart and soul in is special to me. Sometimes, even a simple script works. It clicks and becomes super-duper hits. It proves that viewers appreciate good cinema. There is no point getting agitated when a film does not garner appreciation. I think audience today is intelligent enough to recognise a good film.

Who are your best friends in the industry?
I feel blessed to have many and I can’t name a few. Everyone is equally important to me.

Is marriage on cards?
I have been open about my relationships, and I am not seeing anyone right now. Maybe, I can think about marriage when I get the right girl. Marriage is about understanding, and how both of us are going to spend our whole lives together.

Tell us about Anbanavan Asaradhavan Adangadhavan (AAA)
It will be an important film in my career and the script has everything in it. I believe it will cater to all sections of audience.

Do you believe in destiny?
Yes. But I also believe that the harder you work towards the right direction, the more your destiny changes for the better.
