The mighty revolutionary: Remembering Che Guevara on his 92nd birth anniversary 

Ernesto Guevara de la Serna, more popularly known by his byname "Che", was born on this day in the year 1928. Today marks the 92nd birth anniversary of the revolutionary and the "theoretician and tactician" of the Guerrilla warfare. The communist icon who was an integral part of the Cuban Revolution is still remembered fondly for his book "The Motorcycle Diaries" by the "lovers of revolution" and has become a poster boy for resistance and struggle.

Che was studying medicine when in 1950, he embarked on a 4,500-kilometer (2,800 mi) solo trip through the rural provinces of northern Argentina on a motorcycle. Later in 1951 he went on another nine-month long, 8,000-kilometer (5,000 mi) continental motorcycle trek through part of South America. During this course, he penned his accounts of travel on local notes which came to be known as 'Motorcycle diaries'. (Youtube screen grab)

In 1959, when Castro took power Guevara became in-charge of La Cabaña Fortress prison. Later, he became president of the Cuban national bank and helped to shift the country’s trade relations from the United States to the Soviet Union. Cuban photographer Alberto Korda's photo of Che Guevara has been a prominent graphic for posters, t-shirts, playing cards and almost everything. Today, the Che image is well over 50 years old and is still as popular. Che was at a funeral of the La Coubre blast victims, when midst tragedy, desolation, and indignation, photographer Korda’s lens came across Che’s face when he was looking for a cover picture for a pro revolution magazine- Revolución. In 1967, Che was killed by the US backed Bolivian army. The forces captured Guevara on October 8 when he was fighting against the Bolivian government. He was captured and assassinated the next day. His hands , as a proof of death were cut off and sent to Castro. His body was the buried in an unmarked grave by the army. (Youtube screen grab)
