CHANDIGARH: Heavy rain that lashed parts of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) on August 24 has exposed Gurugram's fragility of its glittering infrastructure.
Faced with the familiar gridlock, the District Disaster Management Authority stepped in and issued an advisory asking the corporate offices, government and private schools and institutions in the Millennium City to allow work from home on August 25.
The move is aimed at reducing traffic congestion and helping civic agencies carry out road, drain repair and cleaning work without further disruption.
Gurugram Deputy Commissioner Uttam Singh announced that due to heavy rainfall in the city, waterlogging and traffic congestion are possible at various locations.
The four-wheelers were stalled mid-road, two-wheelers were pushed through waist-deep water, and social media was filled with videos of Gurugram residences looking more like Venice.
Golf Course Road, dubbed the city’s “Billionaire’s Mile” for its cluster of luxury condominiums and corporate towers, went under knee-deep water within hours of the downpour.
The Signature Tower flyover, one of the city’s busiest junctions, turned into a chokepoint as vehicles waded through flooded stretches.
Also, sections along the National Highway were no better, with commuters stuck for hours as traffic crawled through the slush.
