The Supreme Court will get three new judges, taking its working strength to 37, just one short of its sanctioned strength of 38.
Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal on Monday announced the elevation of Justice Sunita Agarwal, Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court; Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya, Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court; and Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh, Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court, to the Supreme Court.
Meghwal announced the appointments in a social media post.
The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended the three judges for elevation on September 28.
The apex court currently has 34 judges. With the new appointments, its strength will rise to 37 once the three judges take oath.
The sanctioned strength of the Supreme Court, including the Chief Justice of India, is 38 judges. The strength was recently increased from 34 following the enactment of the Supreme Court Amendment Act, 2026.
