MYSURU: Nanjangud BJP candidate V Srinivasa Prasad on Friday said defeating Congress is not new for him and hoped to repeat the 1999 Chamarajanagar Lok Sabha election result when he defeated the grand old party as a JD(U) candidate.

Speaking to media persons, he recalled Congress denying him the ticket in 1999 following which he switched over to JD(U) and won by more than 1 lakh votes.

“Then I had got lead in all seven assembly segments of Chamarajanagar including Nanjangud. I have fought 12 elections in my political career spanning over four decades,” he said.

Prasad hit out at his rivals for raking up his health issue stating, “I may be physically tired due to political struggles I had involved into, but I am 100 times mentally stronger than you.”

He took pains to justify his resignation as MLA and said he has apologised to the voters for necessitating the bypoll. The former minister ridiculed the Chief Minister for going street after street to seek votes and said it shows how desperate he has become.

He came down heavily on Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge accusing him of being power hungry and managing to become minister in every cabinet by exploiting the weakness of chief ministers.

Training his guns on KPCC chief G Parameshwar for his statement that he too was part of a decision to drop him from cabinet, he said the home minister bought Congress ticket to contest for assembly in 1989 and also the minister post by bribing then Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao’s advisor Jitendra Singh.
