‘Class X student humiliated for wearing headscarf’

A Class X student has accused an invigilator of humiliating her for wearing headscarf during the mathematics examination on March 30.

KASARGOD: A Class X student has accused an invigilator of humiliating her for wearing headscarf during the mathematics examination on March 30.
In a complaint sent to the Minister for Education, her father said the teacher “specifically asked her if she was hiding paper chits for copying in her scarf”, an allegation denied by the teacher in toto.
The student of Varakkad High School near Vellarikkundu alleged the invigilator, Mini from St Thomas School, Thomapuram, in Chittarikkal, asked her twice if she was hiding chits under the scarf, and was closely monitoring her throughout the examination, which made her uncomfortable.

The father, who requested not to identify the student, said his child was an epileptic patient and the public humiliation might have taken a toll on her confidence.
“The teacher even shouted at her while submitting the answersheets saying the papers were not tied properly,” he said and added that he had to call in a counsellor to “get the child back”.

However, the teacher rejected the allegations.
“There were 20 students in the classroom and I gave a common direction to the children to throw out chits if they had any. As an invigilator I was doing my duty,” she said. “I don’t even know the girl to target her.”
She said the girl’s father had telephoned her after the exam and accused her of wrongdoing without verifying the facts.
