KOCHI: The increase in pollution and erratic lifestyle has fuelled a steady rise in the number of people suffering from respiratory illnesses. According to WHO, a large majority of the world’s population suffers from respiratory disorders and it is considered the most common and significant cause of illness and death around the world. The situation is no different in India as it tops the list of countries where deaths occur due to lung diseases. Decline in air quality across India is one of the major causes of air pollution and is gradually becoming a silent killerAccording to India’s National Health Profile, about 3.5 million people reported acute respiratory infection. India had a rapid increase of up to 1.4 million in the previous year and a 30% increase since 2010.        


In the backdrop of the alarming situation that India faces with regard to respiratory wellness, it is important for all of us to take immediate action to prevent chronic conditions such as asthma. The data from WHO also reveals that India accounts for 10% of the world’s asthma patients! Preventive care can help reduce the incidence of respiratory ailments.    Start following these basic tips to attain respiratory wellness  and protect you from ailments such as asthma. 

1) Add Ginger to your daily diet: Ginger contains an antioxidant called gingerols which has properties similar to of black pepper that helps in warding off throat and respiratory tract infections. It also facilitates easy breathing by treating chest congestion. Try consuming ginger directly or in the form of tea and juice for a quick relief. What about our product? Should we mention herbal supplements?  

2) Include Vasaka herb in your diet: Ayurveda texts and modern research backs that the herb Vasaka, also known as Malabar nut, helps in soothing bronchial inflammation and opening airways that relieve chest congestion, thus facilitating the discharge of Phlegm. It also assists in suppressing cough, thinning bronchial secretions and improving sluggish lung function. It is advised to consume Vasaka in the form of juice, syrup and supplements available in the market.

3) Consume Oregano: Oregano contains all the vitamins and minerals that are beneficial to our immune system, which helps in promoting good health. It also possesses anti-inflammatory properties and is rich in other lung cleansing elements that help to treat asthma, sinusitis and cough.

The garlic clove can be consumed directly or in the form of supplements available in the market. 

5) Stay away from Smoke, Pollution: For people who are prone to respiratory ailments, it is advisable to stay away from smoke emitted by cars or factories by wearing a face mask. Avoid passive smoking and stay away from fireworks, as any kind of smoke might trigger an unpleasant sensation to the lungs and will eventually result in severe coughing and wheezing. If you are a habitual smoker, quit smoking right away!

6) Intake of peppermint: Peppermint contains menthol, vitamin A and C, Copper, iron and iodine which helps in soothing the muscles of the respiratory tract and opens the airways to breathe easily. Peppermint is a powerful antioxidant; it promotes lung health and fights harmful organisms that can cause respiratory illnesses. One can use peppermint in tea or in the form of oil that can be rubbed on the chest or inhaled through vaporizer for effective results. 

7) Consumption of Tulasi: Ayurveda texts and modern research backs that Tulasi has many medicinal health benefits and is used in numerous Ayurvedic preparations. Tulasi is effective in treating respiratory disorders such as cough, cold, asthma and bronchitis. Tulasi leaves are used in tea and can be consumed directly. It also helps in the strengthening of lungs. 

8) Working out and maintaining a healthy diet:  Have smaller, but more frequent meals and refrain from consuming food right before falling asleep. Include foods like ginger, garlic and fish in your diet as they are considered a great meal for people suffering from asthma.
