Thumbs down for green protocol

The efforts by the Suchitwa Mission to implement the green protocol at the ongoing MG University youth festival here have come a cropper.

KOZHENCHERRY : The efforts by the Suchitwa Mission to implement the green protocol at the ongoing MG University youth festival here have come a cropper.

According to the Suchitwa Mission, efforts had been initiated in this regard and waste bins/ boxes were provided for waste collection. However, the efforts had been undermined by the organising committee. The committee put up plastic boards and flex boards in the name of publicity.

They also provided food in polystyrene (thermocol) plates. At the last edition of the MG University youth festival--Saparya 2016--in Thodupuzha, the Suchitwa Mission had initiated efforts  to reduce the consumption of plastic.

The Suchitwa Mission has been implementing the green protocol at various festivals to tackle the waste menace generated as a result of the huge turnout.

Recently, the initiative was successfully tried out at the Maramon and Cherukolppuzha conventions. The Kozhenchery panchayat authorities had stopped the waste collection five years ago and started decentralised waste management.

Panchayat sources said they would address the issue of waste menace following the conclusion of the youth festival.
