THE most intriguing factor when it comes to staying in shape and being fit is the problem of handling one’s weight. Well, I have been through the thick and thin of it all – see myself expand and contract. Now, I do not care what my weighing machine says. I feel good the way I am and that’s what fitness is all about.

Nature has created all human beings in one common form, but still different – and that is different shapes, sizes, colours, length, breadth and all other dimensions. There is need for an awareness on the increased stress that is created by many commercial establishments in instilling a fear in the minds of people that they have to weigh this much for this height and have to do this or this (read- buy this equipment or that product!). When you buy it, their job is done. It doesn’t matter if you use the treadmill to hand clothes to dry or you use that protein mix to have a good milk shake. The product is sold, but fitness never happens because the fear is still there deeply embedded in the mind. And what is there in the mind will constantly work itself out through the body 24/7, whatever you may try out.

So if you want to be fit, here’s what you should do and that’s so very simple. When you wake up, look into the mirror for a while after you brush your teeth and wash your face. Smile at yourself really well. You may do it alone behind closed doors. If you do it in some commonplace at home and someone is watching you and trying to laugh, please invite them to join you in this game and do it together.

Say to yourself: “I am healthy. I am fit. I am slim and trim. I am active. I am dynamic. I am smart.” Say it from the depth of your heart, because it is the truth. What you say is what you believe. What you believe is what you are. And focussing on what you are will become your everyday reality. You can even write these words and paste them along with a picture of a slim you.

For those people who weigh much more than they feel they should and want to slim down can work out their ideal weight. If you need to be 58 kgs when you are weighing 78 kgs, repeat to yourself in the mirror: I weigh 58 kgs. Try it out for 21 days continuously. These words that you say with feeling have power. They will not dissolve all that extra fat as a workout would do, but they will clear up the mental energies and set your blueprint right. Then you will begin to do things that easily keep you fit and in shape. Most important note of caution: When you are trying all this out, there may be people who come and tell you, “Oh you look so fat! Why don’t you do something about it!” You have to look at them as if they were talking through their hat or talking to someone else, not you. Don’t believe a word of what they say! If they persist with such statements, you may better avoid them if it calls for that. If someone asks you what is your weight, you will not tell them what you actually weigh in the present moment, but the weight you want to be. If 58 kgs is your ideal weight, then say you weigh 58 kgs and not 78 kgs. If someone tells you are speaking lies, then you can take refuge in Tiruvalluvar who said: Truth is that which does no harm to others! Say good things to yourself and about others and you can change the way you and the world look!
