Vertu just got competition. High-end Swiss watchmaker Tag Heuer has launched the Racer smartphone, which the company describes as “the first luxury phone crafted for high performance”.
The Racer cellphone is made with carbon fibre which is lined with titanium and special grade rubber. These enable the smartphone to stay shockproof while being lightweight and easy to handle.
The company says the Racer’s design was “inspired by Tag Heuer’s heritage in GT cars and Formula 1”. As part of its 150th anniversary, the company continues to celebrate its motor-racing heritage with a round-the-world tour with partner Tesla Motors. The Racer is powered by Android Gingerbread and will feature the first customisable 3D user interface. Starting at 2,800 Euros (US$3,700), the Racer debuted at Tag Heuer shops and luxury mobile, watch and jewellery boutiques in July.
