Google Doodle Celebrates 180th Birthday of Carlos Juan Finlay
Google doodle today celebrates 180th birthday of Carlos Juan Finlay, the man who propounded the theory that yellow fever is caused by mosquitoes.
In another creative way of celebrating birthdays, Google’s doodle has the face of the scientist in water with leaves and mosquitoes shown breeding on them on their page.
The man who saved millions life through his theory, was born in 1833 in Puerto Príncipe, currently known as the Cuban city of Camagüey. He went to a medical college in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania before completing his education in Havana and Paris. Finlay later opened his own medical clinic and helped people in Cuba.
Finlay was appointed by the Cuban government to study the causes of yellow fever with a North American commission in 1879.
Finlay was sent to the fifth International Sanitary Conference in Washington DC in 1881 as Cuban delegate where he came up with the theory that yellow fever is caused by mosquito now known as Aedes aegypti.
Finlay, a French and Scottish descent, passed away on August 1915 due to a severe brain stoke when at home in Havana.
