The Kerala HC on Monday condemned the state police for its high handed behaviour against devotees at the Sabarimala shrine. Over 60 people were arrested late Sunday night after unprecedented protests broke out by devotees against the Kerala Police's restrictions.
Hindu Aikya Vedi leader KP Sasikala on Monday morning was granted permission to visit the shrine for her grandson's ' choroonu ' (i.e., rice feeding ceremony). The police issued her a notice, demanding that she return within six hours.
On Saturday, she had made an attempt to visit the temple but was not let in as the police cited time restrictions. Following her sit-in protest, she was arrested and later released on bail. The state had come to a standstill after an unexpected hartal called by right-wing Hindu outfits in protest against her arrest.
The Sabarimala temple had opened Friday evening for the two-month-long Mandala Pooja-Magaravilaku annual pilgrimage season, as a stand-off continued over the entry of menstrual age women into the shrine.
