The second and final phase of the Chhattisgarh Assembly elections ended on Tuesday with 72 per cent voter turnout recorded till 5 pm across 72 constituencies. A total of 1,079 candidates, including former Chief Minister Ajit Jogi and his family, were in the fray.
Although polling was peaceful throughout the 19 districts, Congress alleged that the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) had taken attempts to tamper the Electronic Voting Machines( EVM) in 'party stronghold'. Voting was “interrupted in around two dozen polling stations” where technical glitches were reported in the electronic EVMs.
Meanwhile, a woman Naxal was gunned down in an encounter with security forces in Sukma district.
The second phase will decide if the BJP, that won 43 of the 72 seats in the 2013 Assembly polls, continues to be strong as the party aspires for the fourth consecutive term under the leadership of Chief Minister Raman Singh.
Eyeing a fourth consecutive term, the BJP has set a target of winning 65 plus seats in the 90-member Assembly, while the Congress is seeking to end its 15-year exile from power in the tribal-dominated state.
The first phase of polling, held on November 12, covering 18 seats across Maoist-affected regions saw an overall voter turnout of 76.28 per cent.

The voters were seen irritated owing to delay in getting the problem resolved. In some polling booths, the voters were seen returning without exercising their franchise. The spokesperson of the chief electoral office in Raipur, however, claimed that the technical issues reported in some of the booths in the morning have been promptly attended and smooth conduct of polls remains underway everywhere.
EVM glitches have been reported from Jora booth in Raipur and EVM's in two booths in the Raipur (north) seat have also stopped functioning.
