Dull to Delightful in 10 Steps

Rajat Singhi, Founder and Creative Director of Address Home, shares ways to breathe life into jaded decor.

Born with an innate sense of design, Rajat Singhi spent the prime years of his life deepening his knowledge of the furnishing industry.

After obtaining a graduate degree from the prestigious Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania, Singhi gained valuable investment banking experience at Credit Suisse First Boston in California. In 2003, he joined his parents’  thriving furnishing business.

Singhi’s mother, Taruna Singhi, is an established name in the home furnishings industry. She started one of India’s first home furnishing companies, designing and manufacturing stylised home linens for high end retailers abroad. Working closely with her, Singhi spent three years designing and manufacturing linen for international giants such as Crate and Barrel, Bloomingdale’s, Neiman Marcus, Harrods, amongst others.

Over time, Singhi realised that India lacked stores that focused on stylish furnishings and accessories. So, in 2008, he decided to fill the gap by setting up Address Home.

With its unique products and eclectic styling ideas, Address Home has quickly become a go-to destination for the discerning. The brand houses bespoke plush bed and table linen, cushions, curtain and upholstery fabric in silk, cotton, satin, velvet, jacquard and polyester, embellished with foil printing, contemporary embroidery, crystals, quilting and other types of texturing. Vases, lamps, lights and glassware, serving and dining pieces, flowers and candles are also a part of the store’s vast collection.

If you are stuck with a drab decor and need fresh ideas, Rajat Singhi’s simple tips will help you redo your space without spending a fortune.

1. Accent Furniture: Accent furniture is used in any room to complement an existing setting. Colourful poufs can glam up the entire space. You can use a contemporary leather trunk as a coffee table that doubles the surface and storage space in the living room.

2. Cushions: A few colourful, well-placed cushions could be all the colour you need. This is an easy way to add colour without a major investment of time or money. Scatter pillows on the floor, sofas or chairs, using colours that connect with the other furniture in the room.

 3. Mirrors: Mirrors can do wonders—from illuminating dark corners to adding elegance and drama to an area to creating the illusion of space. They can turn a bare corner into a signature space. Mirrors can give the illusion of depth to a flat wall or even make the wall seem to disappear. They can serve as works of art, too.

4. Lights: Lighting creates, paradoxically, both reality and illusion. Lighting fixtures illuminate the treasured objects in your home, and can highlight colours. Add a chandelier for the dining space or choose an accent light or a floor lamp in the living room to lighten up a dull space.

5. Accessories: Add metallic shine with brass, silver or copper decorative accessories like t-lights, candle holders, etc. Accent these with coloured accessories like jars, Buddha, in teal, red, purple, for a palette that plays off the colour wheel and  tone it down by pairing it with gray and neutral setting.

 6. Wall Art: Add style to your walls with wall décor. From ceramic flowers, butterflies to metal and mirror accents, you can choose wall art that complements your personality and makes your home more inviting.

7. Flowers and vases: Any area that appears dull, drab or mono colour, can benefit a lot from the placement of something bright like vases, planters with bright flowers.

8. Brighten Bookshelves: Organising books and using colorful decorative objects on bookshelves in a living space adds a dash of colour. Paint the inside of the bookcase with a neutral colour.  This will help to visually connect all the items on the shelves so they appear less like clutter and make a room more uniform.

9. Candles and Candle décor: Candle holders of different shapes and sizes can give a whole new look to your corners. Aromatic decorative candles placed on chic candle-holders can help add an eclectic and contemporary touch to your home. You can place candelabras to your dining table or glass hurricanes with colourful candles in the living room  to perk up a dull space.

10. Bed Linen: New bedspreads and cushions can instantly transform your bedroom. Try bed linens in palette pops with stunning embellishments, foiling and embroidery. Yellow, red, purple with neutral colour grey can brighten up the entire space. If you have a bland empty corner of the room, turn it into a focal point or vignette. Get a small occasional table or pedestal and place coordinated accessories like sculpture, vase or candle holders on it.

Address Home currently has two stores each in Delhi and Mumbai and one store each in Hyderabad, Bangalore and Chennai.
