What Defines Good Wood

Born in 1969, Aditya Gupta, Founder of The Furniture Republic, completed his bachelor’s in engineering from University of  Roorkee in 1990 and MBA from Delhi University in 1992.

Young and dynamic, Aditya soon ventured into an exports business with his brother, growing it multiple fold within a couple of years. The awards kept pouring in, too. Among them was a gold trophy for the maximum export of carpets from India, beating companies that had been in the business for three generations.

In 2000, he launched his first showroom in Delhi, making his products accessible to many more. Since then, there has been no looking back for the brothers.

In 2012, the first store of The Furniture Republic (TFR), a storehouse of hand picked furniture and decorative accessories from across the globe was inaugurated in Noida, and now it has three stores. With a global and domestic network of more than 50 vendors, the story of TFR has just begun. In 2013, TFR was launched worldwide and a push towards dot com retailing is on the cards.

Aditya’s work is an interesting blend of the East and West, reflecting his insights into the cultures, traditions and needs of customers within and outside India. Apart from managing a successful business, he is fond of photography and spends his leisure time travelling and exploring the deeper less known places even in well known countries. His love for designing makes him work closely with clients, and his passion for architecture has led him to build a host of creative and beautiful houses, factories and showrooms.

“While the most obvious way to choose the right furniture for your home is to pick styles, colours and textures that blend with the existing decor style, there are a few other factors that come in to play,” says Aditya. Wood is one of the most popular materials used to make chairs and benches because of its rich appearance, durability, and ease of construction. Wood furniture can be divided into solid and veneer. But, selecting the right wooden furniture for your home can be tricky. These tips from him will help you make the right choice:

1. Quality: When browsing through available choices at a furniture store, make  sure your chosen furniture items are made of high-quality wood in line with your budget. Ask questions about where the material has been sourced from and take a look at the certification that comes with your furniture.

2. Design: One of the things that make the biggest impact when you choose wood  furniture for a modern living room is the design. The right design will be one that is in perfect sync with your existing decor.

3. Placement: When a piece is going to be placed in a family room and used every day, it needs to be durable. Choose wisely,  since you’ll be opening and closing drawers or doors often. But if it is going to be an accent piece in a little-used guest room, durability is not as important as shape and size.

4. Usability: You should look to pick items that will have significant functionality for  you, as you will be spending a sizeable amount of money on your new furniture. When buying chests, display units, centre tables or dining tables, make sure that  you pick a design with lots of intelligent storage options incorporated to enhance the functionality and usability, giving you value for money.

5. Construction: This is determined by two characteristics—the method of joining parts of the wooden item and sturdiness. The joints should be tight without any glue showing.

6. Finish: A quality finish involves three main steps: sanding, staining and finishing. If one of these steps is not done properly, the finish does not look good.

7. Quality seating: When you choose a sofa or upholstered chair, you should consider the look and quality of the item. There are three  components that distinguish a sofa that separates the good ones from the “also- rans”. They are the frame, the seating support and the filling. Not only do these  structural details determine the comfort, they also determine how long the sofa will last in your home.
