NEW DELHI: The 55th National Film Awards for 2007 were presented by President Pratibha Patil at a function here on Wednesday.

Priyadarshan’s Tamil film ‘Kancheevaram’ received the best feature film award, for a rare portrayal of the silk weavers.

Tamil actor Prakash Raj bagged the award for the best actor for his role in ‘Kancheevaram’, depicting the internal struggle of a weaver caught between his ideals and his personal dreams. Eminent musician Manna Dey was conferred with the prestigious Dada Saheb Phalke Award for the year 2007.

Veteran filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan received the award for best director for his delicate and subtle handling of gender issues in a conventional society through his film ‘Naalu Pennungal’, a film based on independent short stories by Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai. The award for the best female actor was presented Kannada film actor Umashree for her performance in Girish Kasaravalli’s Kannada film ‘Gulabi Talkies’. The film was awarded with the best feature film in Kannada as well. The award for the best child actor was presented to Sharad Goyekar for his role in the Marathi film ‘Tingya’.

The President made a special mention about him in her speech.

Hindi film Taare Zameen Par, produced and directed by Aamir Khan, received the award for best film on family welfare. Among the regional films, the best feature film award in Tamil went to ‘Periyar’, directed by Gnana Rajasekaran, while ‘Ore Kadal’ directed by Shyamaprasad was awarded the best feature film in Malayalam.
