BHADRACHALAM: Nine Maoists were killed in an exchange of fire with police in the Jegurugonda forest within Dornapal police station limits in Dantewada district of Chhattishgarh on Tuesday.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police (Dantewada) Kalluri Sivaramakrishna told reporters in Dantewada that the police were tipped off about a Maoist meeting in the Jegurugonda forest.

Following the tip-off, a force drawn from the 111 Battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force and the Chhattisgarh police was sent there in the morning.

They engaged the Maoists in a gunfight lasting two hours at the end of which the guerrillas fled the spot, leaving behind the bodies of nine comrades.

The police claimed to have recovered seven rifles, one 12-bore gun, one burmer gun and a huge quantity of explosive material from the spot.

The police said they were yet to identify the bodies.

There was speculation that the casualties may have included some important Maoist leaders.
