MADURAI: They may not know how to wield a gun, let alone fire it, the legal aspects of policing are alien to them, but they are in the local police force!
In a startling revelation, it was found that as many as 428 police personnel in the Mumbai police have not received any training.
Majority of them are with the Local Arms Unit, popularly referred as LA, a reserve force that is used for security deployment and management of the armoury. This serious lapse came to the fore during an exercise undertaken by Commissioner Arup Patnaik who met policemen and officers recruited since 2009 for a feedback.
When some of the policemen failed to turn up for the ‘call-on’, the Commissioner asked for the reason and was shocked when he was informed that many were not imparted training.
