NEW DELHI: The promoters of the Essar Group and Loop Telecom, accused in connection with the 2G scam, appeared before a Delhi court on Saturday and sought bail.

Essar Group promoters Ravi and Anshuman Ruia and Loop Telecom promoters I P Khaitan and Kiran Khaitan, appeared before the Special CBI Judge O P Saini for the first time since the court issued summons against them nearly three months ago.

The court, however, posted the hearing on the bail applications for April 21, after the CBI sought time to file its reply on the petitioners’ plea.

“The matter is put up for reply and arguments on the bail applications, if any, on April 21,” the Judge said.

Judge Saini had issued a warning, on March 17, to the promoters of the Essar Group and Loop Telecom to appear before it in their own interest, after they had thrice failed to present themselves in the court.

Counsel for Ruias, Advocate Mukul Rohatgi said that they had no role at any stage and were ready to contest the charges levelled against them.

“I am ready to argue on the charges because the Supreme Court is yet to take its decision regarding the jurisdiction of the Special Court in taking cognizance of the charge sheet,” the counsel said.
