UP Power Corporation gets new head

To rid the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) of the monopoly of the IAS lobby, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has appointed A P Mishra, senior engineer, as the new managing director of the Corporation.

Till now, the ruling party had appointed only IAS officers in the UPPCL, while the engineering lobby had been pushing for the appointment of an engineer to save the energy sector.

The decision came in the wake of the UPPCL being blamed for power overdrawal, which caused the first grid failure of the country four days ago. Then, IAS officer Avneesh Awasthi was heading the UPPCL. The angry Chief Minister not only immediately removed Awasthi from the post but also refrained from appointing him to another position.

The reports reveal that the UPPCL is not only facing crisis in the power generation but also its distribution and transmission networks are in a shambles and need immediate upgradation.
