Abhishek Verma, wife get bail, rearrested

The CBI on Wednesday arrested Abhishek Verma and his Romanian wife Anca Maria Neacsu in a fresh case of forgery, based on a complaint from Union Sports Minister Ajay Maken.

Minutes after Special CBI Judge Sanjeev Jain granted bail to the couple in the arms deal case, the CBI sleuths arrested them again. Later, the Judge remanded them in judicial custody for a day.

“The arrests have been effected by Inspector Vipin Kumar in the court itself and identity of the investigating officer is not in dispute at all. I do not find any substance in the opposition of the defence counsel. Keeping in view the facts and circumstances of the case, both the accused are remanded in judicial custody till tomorrow,” the Judge said in its order.

The accused were granted bail as the probe agency failed to file its chargesheet within the stipulated 60-day period after they were arrested for allegedly receiving money from a Swiss Arms firm for keeping it out of Indian Government’s blacklist. The court had also asked them to furnish a personal and surety bond of `10 lakh each. Acting on Maken’s complaint, the CBI registered a fresh case against Verma under Section 469 of the IPC. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) also sought court’s permission to arrest the couple in a money laundering case.  The court, however, allowed ED to interrogate Verma and his wife in Tihar Jail itself.
