Delhi market fire doused

The two-day old blaze that gutted nearly 30 shops in an electrical and electronics goods market here was finally doused Saturday amid fears that the old building might collapse, fire officials said.

A fire broke out on the second floor of Bhagirath Palace in the Chandni Chowk area Thursday evening and leapt up to the fifth floor threatening nearly 2,000 shops and warehouses.

"The fire was brought under control Thursday night but it restarted Friday morning. The blaze was put out today (Friday)," a fire official said.

Delhi Fire Service director A.K. Sharma told IANS that the fire was put out completely and as precautionary measure, four fire engines had been stationed near the building.

"Thankfully, no one was injured in the incident but items worth crores of rupees were gutted. The actual losses can be calculated only by Monday," the market association's president B.K. Jindal told IANS.
