No SC relief for Essar, Loop

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday declined to grant any interim stay on the summons issued to Essar and Loop Telecom officials for their alleged involvement in a 2G spectrum scam case.

A Bench comprising Justice G S Singhvi and Justice S J Mukhopadhyaya, however, agreed to hear their petitions, which challenged the jurisdiction of the special CBI court to hear the case on the ground that corruption charges have not been slapped against them like other accused in the multi-crore rupee scam. It was on February 22 that the special CBI court had directed them to appear before it for their alleged involvement in the 2G scam.

“We will quash the proceedings, if we come to the conclusion that the court has no jurisdiction to hear the matter,” the Bench remarked.

In the process, the Bench issued notices to the CBI and other parties and asked them to file their replies within two weeks.
