Trinamool-Congress rift widens in Bengal

The fight between the two UPA allies escalated after the TMC roped in Shahnaz Hussain, who is from a Congress family.

KOLKATA: A day after the Congress in West Bengal launched a scathing attack on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the TC, the ‘ma, maati, manush’ party came out all guns blazing to defend Didi on Thursday.

It was also fitting that January 5 was Mamata’s 57th birthday.

The TC gave a strong reply to the Congress by roping in a new member from a family, which has Congress background.

Shahnaz Hussain’s, grand-daughter of A B A Ghani Khan Choudhary, formal announcement to join TC has raised many eyebrows.

Hussain, who contested the West Bengal Assembly elections independently and lost, was inducted into the party by senior TC leaders Subrata Mukherjee and Subrata Bakshi. Mausam Noor and Abu Naser Khan Choudhary from the Ghani family are currently two of the foremost leaders in the state Congress.

Commerce and Industries Minister Partha Chatterjee lambasted Cabinet colleague and Textiles Minister Manas Bhunia for criticising Mamata. “In spite of being in the Cabinet, they are appearing on the metro channel and saying things. The Congress and the CPM are following the same path. While Mamata Banerjee is pursuing development, the Congress and the CPM are pursuing politics of disruption. But they cannot stop her from doing developmental work,” said Partha.  “We are surprised that the CPM and the Congress are jointly trying to blame the TC. Those who think that Mamata Banerjee’s Government is making mistakes, should resign. But they won using her name. Today, if they do not agree with her Government, then they should keep her name aside and contest elections and then they will understand,”  Partha added.

The TC has called for an agitation against the Congress on January 9 as the relationship between both the parties further soured.

“It is their familial problem. If they can solve it, it is good. We have only one team and that’s the Left Front,” said Opposition Leader Surjya Kanta Mishra.
