NEW DELHI: With an eye on the crucial Dalit and the other backward castes vote bank, the Congress promised sub-quota to most backward Dalits and free legal aide to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes while releasing its Uttar Pradesh election manifesto in Lucknow on Tuesday.
The party promised a school in every village of Uttar Pradesh if it came to power in the state while also saying that several residential schools would be established for the SCs/STs and OBCs.
Establishment of the Lokayukta and bringing the chief minister under its purview has also been promised.
Congress MP and Union Telecom and HRD Minister Kapil Sibal along with Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee President Rita Bahuguna Joshi released the manifesto promising a slew of measures to attract Dalits and OBCs to its fold. Union Law Minister Salman Khurshid and the party's new OBC face Sam Pitroda were also present at the launch and addressed the media.
Sibal said that the Congress was committed to improving the educational standard in the state while adding that 500 model schools would be established. He also promised that 1 lakh teacher vacancies in the state would be filled.
Laying emphasis on developing infrastructure in the state, the manifesto promised to connect all villages with roads by 2020 and creation of 20 lakh jobs in the next five years.
Sibal mentioned that the Congress would form a special cell to implement the manifesto and release annual report card.
He also promised an equitable solution to the Ram Janambhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute.
