MCI gets tough with approvals

The Medical Council of India (MCI) has made it clear that it will not grant recognition to new medical colleges and give  sanction for additional seats in the existing medical colleges after July 15 every year.

Complying with the Supreme Court ruling, the MCI has asked the various state governments that the time-frame laid down in its regulations should be strictly adhered to.

This was conveyed in a letter sent to the respective Directors of Medical Education (DMEs) in various states.

In the light of the apex court order, the commencement of new courses or increase in the number of seats for existing MBBS and BDS seats would have to receive the Union Government’s sanction by July 15. If the approval comes late, it would be operative for the next academic year.

The MCI further said that as per the court’s  directives, the second counselling should be the final counselling and the third counselling must not even be contemplated while admitting candidates to these courses. And failure to comply with the court directives would lead to contempt charges.
