NEW DELHI: Union Coal Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal on Wednesday replied to the Election Commission’s show-cause notice served on him for alleged violation of model code of conduct.

Jaiswal had been issued a notice for claiming that “it’s either a Congress government in the state of Uttar Pradesh or it will be President’s rule in the state”.

In his reply, Jaiswal is learnt to have said that his statement had been “misconstrued”.

This was indicated by Jaiswal’s counsel Subhash Chandra Maheshwari on Wednesday. Maheshwari said that Jaiswal’s statement “was taken out of context, and that his statement was a mere suggestion.

Whatever he had said in Kanpur he used the word if and the meaning of it was misconstrued,” Maheshwari said here on Wednesday.
