NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday issued notices to the Centre, states and the Union Territories, seeking their response on a petition that alleged that more than one lakh children have mysteriously disappeared from their homes across the country between 2008 and 2011.

A Bench, comprising Justice Altamas Kabir and Justice S S Nijjar, also sought a reply from the Attorney General on the PIL filed by NGO Bachpan Bachao Andolan.

Senior counsel H S Phoolka and advocate Bhuwan Ribhu said as per the official statistics, about 1.17 lakh children were missing and believed to have been subjected to trafficking for begging, prostitution and child labour.

“On an average, 11 children are reported missing every day from different parts of the country and the police refuses to register FIRs in most of the cases,” they added.
