‘Trivedi's resignation under PM's consideration’

Pranab assured members that the House will be informed after a decision is taken on the railway minister’s resignation.

NEW DELHI: Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee Monday said Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi had submitted his resignation to Manmohan Singh and the matter was under the prime minister's consideration.

"The prime minister told me that Mr. Trivedi submitted his resignation last (Sunday) evening and it is under consideration," Mukherjee told the Lok Sabha.

The matter of Trivedi's resignation was raised by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) member Yashwant Sinha, Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader Basudeb Acharia and Communist Party of India leader Gurudas Dasgupta soon after the house met in the morning. Sinha and Acharia had demanded suspension of question hour.

Mukherjee assured the members that the house will be informed after a decision is taken on Trivedi's resignation.

Trivedi resigned following pressure from Mamata Banerjee, chief of his Trinamool Congress party, owing to his proposal to hike passenger fares in the rail budget.
