Attack on Army convoy in Jammu and Kashmir

A man was injured in an attack on an Army convoy on Saturday in an uptown locality in Srinagar. The attack comes two days after militants attacked an Army base and a police station in Jammu division, killing 15 people, including eight security forces personnel and two civilians.

Witnesses said panic gripped Hyderpora locality when unknown gunmen opened fired on a convoy of security forces, while it was passing through the highway.

Earlier this year, militants had attacked an Army convoy in the same area on the eve of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to Kashmir. Eight Army soldiers were killed in that attack.

Soon after the attack security forces, including Army soldiers, cordoned off the highway and its adjacent colonies. Inspector General of Police Abdul Gani Mir told reporters that the police are investigating the matter and it was too early to comment on the attack. “It’s all speculation and premature to say anything. We are investigating the matter,” he said.

Witnesses said that people ran for cover as they hear intermittent gunshots. “I thought militants might have attacked the Army convoy and we all ran for cover. Suddenly, the Army and security personnel cordoned off the area and launched combing operation,” a local shopkeeper Abdul Rahman said.
