Fresh plea against K-ommissioning

G Sundarrajan, who earlier filed a petition in the Supreme Court raising several objections on the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KKNPP), has filed a fresh application in the apex court on Tuesday.

He sought a direction to the government not to take any steps towards commissioning the plant or bringing the reactors to initial criticality till it comprehensively examines the issue of sub-standard equipment in the KKNPP and its impact on reactor and public safety, with the involvement of independent experts.

He also sought a direction to the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) and the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) to file fresh report on the status of implementation of the post-Fukushima safety measures and direct that the commissioning and initial criticality of these reactors should be done only after the implementation of all safety measures. He sought a direction to TN/district administration and NPCIL to conduct mock-drills at the plant.
