Budget session begins on February 21

The Budget Session of Parliament will be convened from February 21 and the general budget for 2013-14 will be presented on February 28.

The Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs  (CCPA) met on Friday and decided the timing and duration of the session.

The recommendations of the CCPA will be sent to President Pranab Mukerjee for formal notification.

The Railway Budget will be presented on February 26 and the economic survey will be presented to Parliament the next day. The over seven-week session will have a month-long recess from March 22 to April 22 and will culminate on May 10.

The government is unveiling a heavy legislative agenda for the budget session.  The government has already made official amendments in the in the proposed Lokpal and Lokayuktas Bill-2011 and will move these amendments in Parliament.

The government will also bring a Bill to amend the criminal law with a focus on crime against women.

The Union Cabinet on Friday decided to bring an ordinance to amend the criminal law with focus on crime against women, providing punishment upto the entire life of a convict in case of rape.

The decision to promulgate the ordinance was taken at a specially-convened meeting of Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
